Cuando Devendra Banhart sacó su disco Cripple Crow me sorprendió ver a Maharaji con corona de Krishna entre el collage de fotos de la portada del CD. Nunca me ha gustado mucho su música pero me picó la curiosidad al ver la imagen. ¿La habría diseñado él? ¿era un guiño del diseñador? Y, la verdad, la había olvidado hasta esta noche que me he puesto a ver videos en youtube y he llegado a uno de él. Y recordé la portada del disco de nuevo. Así que busqué en google información y encontré esto:
"He was born in Texas in 1981, the son of followers of Indian mystic Prem Rawat. At age two, he moved with his mother to Caracas, Venezuela, where they lived an exotic, if perilous life. "There just wasn't a lot of room for artistic things there," he explains. "People were too worried about getting shot." Así que sus padres eran también seguidores de Maharaji. También encontré esta entrevista:
Splendid: So that was your name growing up? I was wondering if you had changed it?
Devendra Banhart: That's my real name. My parents actually didn't name me that. They had an Indian man name me that, a friend of theirs. They gave him my photograph; he was a spiritual teacher, nothing religious or cultish, very simple. Think along the lines of, not someone like, but maybe a similar context as Rumi or Kabir or that kind of thing. They gave him my photograph and he named me. My middle name is my mom's name.
Sus padres le enseñaron a un amigo suyo (no dice el nombre Prem Rawat) una foto y él le puso Devendra, que por cierto quiere decir rey de dioses y es como llamarse Pepe en la India. Dice que nada de secta, muy simple. Él también ha elegido el camino hippie, la nueva era y la atracción por el misticismo oriental alla'americana.
